Mordecai, ultimando!/Mordecai´s last arrangements!

Nuestra BMW está casi a punto de volver a la vida, esta rodeada de cantidad de sus propias piezas, unas nuevas, y otras restauradas, que pronto volverán a lucir sobre ella.
Una de la cosas que a veces se olvidan injustamente, es la tornilleria, si esta demasiado a la vista, y esta deslucida, y´aún más, si se ha estropeado tanto la cabeza como la rosca en su extracción. es fundamental sustituirlos, si nos ha costado sacarlos, imaginemos lo que costará la próxima vez que alguien ( puede que nosotros mismos) tenga que sacarlos de nuevo...Cambiémoslo!

Our BMW is almost ready to kick ass! Right now it is surrounded by its own pieces – some brand new and some restored- that will be back on it soon enough. One of the things unjustly neglected are the bolts. They can look particularly bad on the bike if they are too visible or shabby. If they have been damaged in both their extremes during their extraction it is paramount that we replace them. If you though it was difficult to remove them the first time we tried, imagine how would it be for someone –or maybe yourself- having to take them out again. Let´s remove them!

Ha sido mas complicado de lo que parecia, ya que son 4 colores cortados por separado, y luego montados, pero el resultado es espectacular, y en breve lucira en la moto.

It´s been a little bit more difficult than expected, it´s 4 colors cut separately, and then fitted, but the result is awesome, and it will look great soon on the bike.

Traje a medida para Mordecai (Bmw r 1100 GS), Bespoke suit for Mordecai.

El asiento rojo es fundamental para parecerse a la abuela r80 GS, ha sido una constante en todas las versiones Paris Dakar de la familia, y aunque el negro que antes vestia no estaba en mal estado, pasar por el taller de tapiceria, y hacerle un traje a medida, era indispensable.

The red seat is essential to look like Grandma r80GS, it has been a constant in every version of the Paris Dakar family, and although the black dressed before was not shabby, go through the upholstery shop, and do a bespoke suit, was indispensable.

Las piezas van llegando/ Some parts are coming.

No lo voy a negar, cuando estoy transformando o restaurando un vehiculo, y me llega la caja con la pieza que estaba esperando, me siento como un niño el dia de Reyes. Ahora están llegando algunas de las piezas que nuestra BMW necesita, se ha adelantado la Navidad!

To be honest, when I´m transforming or restoring a vehicle, and I receive the package with the parts that I´m waiting for, I feel like a child on Christmas morning. Now, some parts that our BMW needs are arriving, Christmas is already here!

Y alguna vez, también nos damos un capricho. Esta bien parecerse al abuelo, pero un detallito de su nieta, la R 1200 GS Adventure, tampoco está mal!

And sometimes, we take care of ourselves. It's good to look like its grandpa, but to look only a little bit like its granddaughter, the r 1200 GS Adventure, its not bad!

Look para Mordecai.

Lo primero que se me pasó por la cabeza, respecto a que look darle a la moto, fue dejarla completamente de serie, que no destacase en absoluto de cualquier otra hermana r1100 GS , solo por su impecable aspecto, pero luego, por ese mismo motivo, decidí darle una renovación total también a su aspecto, hacer algo que la distinga de todas las demás, siempre me ha gustado, que si alguien me ve pasar de refilón, ya sea en moto a coche, no le quepa duda de si soy yo, o alguien que se me parece, que el vehículo, igual que uno intenta con sigo mismo,  tenga su personalidad.
Y pensando en que hacerle, se me ocurrió, que, ¿en quien mejor inspirarse, que en un pariente al que todos admiran?, en la que ha sido, posiblemente, la BMW mas mítica jamas fabricada, su abuela, la BMW r80 GS Paris-Dakar.

La linea ya esta trazada!

The first idea that crossed my mind when thinking of the look I should give to the bike, it was “to leave it completely serial”. That way, apart from its stunning appearance, it would not stand out from any of the other R1100GS. 

On the other hand… I wouldn´t like to be mistaken by another. I want people to recognize me instantly when they see me passing by the street. The same way as a person, a vehicle needs to have its own personality to be more attractive; to have something unique that makes it stand out from all the others. Therefore, I decided to change her appearance too; I decided to do something that would make her different from all the others.

Once that decision was taken, the question was which look to give her? I decided to take inspiration from a family model that everyone is a fan of: The BMW r80 GS Paris-Dakar. This legendary model could well be the most mythical BMW ever created. 

BMW r1100 GS, eliminando oxido. Removing rust.

Un problema comun a la mayoria de vehiculos con ciertos años, y mas aun en las motocicletas, es el deterioro u oxido del tanque de gasolina por dentro, y digo en especial las motos, ya que, muchas personas, y mas aun en climas frios, hibernan sus motos casi 6 meses al año, y en estos largos periodos de inactividad, es cuando el oxido comienza a hacer estragos en el interior de nuestro tanque, a no ser que la dejemos todos los inviernos con el tanque lleno hasta la boca...pero no suele ser lo mas común, ¿no?. Un invierno, no pasa nada, pero cuando son ya muchos los que se acumulan, cualquier día notaremos que la moto tironea mucho, y que, incluso se para, cambiaremos el filtro de gasolina, limpiaremos el carburador, pero el problema persiste. A nuestra BMW, como a muchas otras, le ocurría esto. Llegados a este punto, no queda otra que una restauración total del tanque, asegurarnos de que va a poder ser usada sin problemas durante muchos años.
La r1100 GS, lleva un revestimiento interior en el deposito, un extra de calidad de la marca bávara, pero aun así, en ciertos puntos, el combustible había hecho mella en el revestimiento, y este, se caía a trozos, y las zonas sin protección, ya mostraban su fina capa de oxido, que se mezcla con el carburante, formando una especie de capa de arena muy fina.
Existen varios productos para tratamiento de depósitos, hay que elegir uno acorde a los litros de capacidad de nuestro deposito, y no quedarse corto por intentar ahorrar unos euros, ya que aunque el producto no es precisamente barato, que queden zonas sin tratar en el interior del tanque, invalida totalmente nuestro trabajo y gasto.

A common problem in most old vehicles, and especially in motorbikes, is the deterioration or corrosion in the interior of the gas tank. I said especially in the motorbikes because, many people, mostly in cold climates, hibernate their bikes 6 months a year. During these long breaks, the corrosion starts to damage the inside tank, unless we leave it full of gas up to the top. But that´s not usually the case, is it?

A single winter doesn´t do a lot of damage, but through the years, we’ll start noticing that the bike starts behaving strangely, even getting stalled. When we get to this point, it does not matter what we do: change the gas filter, clean the carburetor…The problem will persist. Like many others, our BMW will have the same problem. Our only option will be to change the whole tank to make sure that the bike will work for many more years to come.

The r1100 GS had a tank liner, a quality plus of the Bavarian Brand. However, the fuel had taken a toll on the lining, and this one was falling apart; the unprotected areas showed a thin layer of rust, which formed what seemed to be a layer of fine sand.

There are several products that we can use to treat a damaged deposit. It is very important that you choose one according to your tank´s capacity. Trying to save a few pounds in this one is a bad idea. Not taking proper care of the damaged areas inside the tank can ruin our whole work. So don´t be mean!

Hay que inventarse unas tapaderas para los orificios del tapón de gasolina, y para el de la bomba, y con la precaución de poner alguna junta de goma, para que quede estanco, ya que la resina desprende vapores a alta temperatura, que se deben quedar dentro del tanque.
Despues de varias horas y de darle todas las vueltas posibles, para que cubra toda la superficie interna, se quitan las tapas, y esta listo.

What do we need to do now? Firstly, we’ll need some covers for the holes in the gas cap and the pump. Secondly, we must use some rubber gasket to make it watertight, since the resin produces high temperature vapors that should remain inside the tank. Finally, after spending several hours reviewing our job and having tried to cover the entire inner surface, we have to remove the taps and…VOILA! Job done!

El resultado final es rugoso, pero, como rezan las instrucciones, es normal. Ya esta listo para pasar por pintura!

The final result feels rough to the touch but according to the instructions, that´s how it should be.

Desnudando a Mordecai

Nuestra chica ha sido una chica fácil, y se ha dejado desnudar con mucha facilidad, y así, al desnudo, es cuando no se puede ya esconder nada, y, aunque está en excelente estado, han quedado patentes varias cosas a repasar, y otras varias a cambiar, lo que haga falta por nuestra chica!

This girl was fairly easy. It has been a piece of cake to strip her. Once naked, she couldn´t hide anything from us. Even though she is in excellent conditions, there are few things that need to be checked and few others that need to be replaced. Whatever the lady needs!
